Wortelen Penen
De wortel werd al duizenden jaren geleden geteeld in Midden-Azië. Egyptenaren en Romeinen kenden de wortel al in verschillende kleuren zoals paars, rood, lichtgeel, groen, wit. Met de wilde soort Daucus Carota als uitgangspunt werd er toen al geselecteerd. Het gebruik beperkte zich toen nog tot medicinale doeleinden. Tijdens de 14de en 15de eeuw werd de wortel bekend in Noord-Europa. Men gaf er toen de voorkeur aan gele wortelen. Het duurde tot de 16de eeuw vooraleer oranje wortelen voor het eerst geteeld werden, met name in Nederland. Later slaagde men er door veredeling verder in grote wortelen te telen. Alle latere rassen zijn van oorsprong ontstaan uit de Nederlandse selecties. Ondertussen is wortel een wereldgroente geworden, vooral oranje, maar in Azië zijn de rode en paarse kleuren heel populair.
